MotorTrend embarked on a highly anticipated comparison, pitting the new 2027 Rivian R2 SUV against three of the market's most favored electric SUVs: the Tesla Model Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Ford Mustang Mach-E. This comprehensive road-trip showdown, destined for the scenic Mammoth Lakes, California, was designed to rigorously test handling, comfort, range, charging capabilities, and advanced technology of these prominent electric vehicles. Excitement surrounded the Rivian R2, hailed as a 'junior R1S,' promising Rivian's signature qualities in a more compact and accessible package. To assess its mettle, Rivian provided a top-of-the-line Performance AWD trim. This variant boasted a potent 656-horsepower dual-motor powertrain, a sophisticated wood and faux-leather interior, a premium 975-watt stereo, a panoramic sunroof, and advanced matrix LED headlights. For this specific matchup, Ford supplied the potent 480-horsepower dual-motor GT variant, further enhanced with the GT Performance package, which added 100 lb-ft of torque and MagneRide shocks. This model also featured a panoramic sunroof and the California Special package, distinguishing it with unique wheels and tape stripes. A $995 paint job elevated its final sticker price to $65,485.
