Electoral Commission Reveals Staggering 2.5 Million New Voters Registered

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has provided an update on the first phase of its nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, announcing that a total of 2,572,054 registrations have been fully completed as of November 28, 2025. This significant figure encompasses both online and physical registrations, with 1,503,832 completions attributed to online pre-registrations and 1,068,222 through in-person physical registrations.

According to Victoria Eta-Messi, INEC's Director of Voter Education and Publicity, the commission is set to display the register of voters for claims and objections. This statutory window will be open from December 15 to 21, 2025, following the conclusion of the first quarter of the CVR exercise. The display locations will be at the Local Government Offices where the registration exercise took place.

Eta-Messi strongly encouraged all eligible citizens, especially those who registered, transferred, or updated their information during this phase, to utilize this period to meticulously verify their details. This includes reporting any inaccuracies they may find and drawing attention to individuals who are ineligible or deceased but still appear on the register. This step aligns with Section 19 of the Electoral Act 2022, which mandates such a public review.

The CVR exercise initially began with online pre-registration on August 18, 2025, subsequently followed by in-person registration which commenced on August 25, 2025. These in-person registrations were conducted across all 774 Local Government Areas, all State Offices, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The first quarter of this extensive exercise is officially scheduled to conclude on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.

Further details provided by Eta-Messi indicate that by the end of the 13th week of the exercise, a cumulative total of 9,891,801 online pre-registrations had been received nationwide. It was from this substantial pool that the 2,572,054 fully completed registrations were derived.

It is important to note that the CVR exercise remains suspended in Anambra State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) due to ongoing electoral activities in these areas. New dates for the resumption of registration in these two locations will be communicated by INEC in due course. Looking ahead, the commission has confirmed that the second phase of the CVR exercise is slated to resume on January 5, 2026, in line with previously released timelines.
