Elden Ring film adaptation by A24 rumors confirmed, Alex Garland will direct

Published 17 hours ago2 minute read

Today, Deadline confirmed previous rumors of an Elden Ring movie by A24, directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Civil War, Annihilation). Bandai Namco, the publisher behind Elden Ring and many other FromSoftware titles, will also produce the film. George R. R. Martin, who helped game director Hidetaka Miyazaki create the world for the original game, will also be a producer. There is currently no release window for the film, and it will likely be years before we learn anything more substantial.

Video game adaptations have had an interesting year between the success of The Minecraft Movie and The Last of Us season two, the finale of which airs this weekend. One of the first things that came to mind when I saw this news was that Elden Ring is trying to win as many Game Awards as possible. They already won Game of the Year in 2022, were nominated for Game of the Year last year, and could potentially earn a nomination again for Elden Ring Nightreign this year. If this movie is any good, it could easily win Best Adaptation of the year it is released.

Fans have had some great reactions on Reddit, with one commenter summing up their feelings about the whole announcement by saying, “I have no idea how they’re going to make this work as a narrative, but with A24 + Garland attached, I’m all in for vibes alone.” With a video game adaptation, it isn’t easy to present the same experience in a non-interactive way. What makes Elden Ring so enjoyable is the freedom to explore a dark fantasy world and the punishing challenges of the enemies and boss fights. An Elden Ring movie will need to be clever to be able to capture those two elements.

Not many people know that this film’s director, Alex Garland, has a history in writing for video games. He co-wrote Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and was a story supervisor for DMC: Devil May Cry. On some level, Garland is familiar with video game stories, especially action-heavy ones. This experience could prove to be invaluable for the Elden Ring movie. But for now, we’ll have to wait to learn more.
