Elden Ring Movie Confirmed with Alex Garland

It has been confirmed that Alex Garland will direct and write an adaptation of the Elden Ring video game for A24, a highly respected film production company. This news follows earlier speculation about Garland's involvement in the project. The Elden Ring video game has sold over 30 million copies.

Garland is known for his work on movies such as Civil War and Ex Machina. While details about the Elden Ring movie are scarce, Garland's appreciation for the game series is evident. In a 2020 interview, he expressed his admiration for Dark Souls, a spiritual predecessor to Elden Ring, citing its embedded poetry and imaginative spaces.

Elden Ring expanded upon the world design of the Dark Souls series, creating a vast open space. This film will continue Alex Garland’s association with A24, the production company behind Civil War and Warfare, among others. Civil War had a production budget of $50 million, making it A24’s most expensive self-produced movie. The Elden Ring movie could potentially have an even larger budget.

A24 is also working on an adaptation of Death Stranding, directed by Michael Sarnoski, expected to be released in 2027. The Elden Ring movie is unlikely to be released before then, as it is currently in pre-production. Alex Garland’s next release is 28 Years Later, scheduled for release on June 20th.

In addition to the movie adaptation, Elden Ring: Nightreign, a co-op spin-off of the main game, is set to release soon. This spin-off boils the essentials of the Elden Ring experience into a 45-minute play loop.
