"Egg-on-the-face situation": Rio Ferdinand fires warning to Man United over deal for Bryan Mbeumo
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has warned his former side that they’re seriously risking humiliating themselves even further if they fail to strike a deal with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo.
United and Brentford have been locked in talks for weeks now over Mbeumo but there are still no indications that an end to the stalemate is close.
United lodged an opening bid worth £45million plus £10m in add-ons early in June, but this was swiftly rejected by the Bees, who insisted they wanted more.
Ruben Amorim’s side responded with an improved offer worth a total £62.5m – the same amount that was paid to Wolverhampton Wanderers to secure the services of Matheus Cunha. However, this too was rebuffed by Brentford, who are holding out for a sum closer to £70m.
United maintain they will not overpay for the Cameroonian despite a remarkable season that saw him plunder a career-high 20 Premier League goals.
There have been suggestions that the deal is in danger of collapsing, but United are still optimistic of landing Mbeumo and having him in place by the time Amorim and his players jet off to the United States for pre-season.
A section of supporters has grown frustrated with the slow movement of negotiations and it seems Ferdinand is no exception.
Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, the former defender remarked, “Man United need to find a way of meeting Brentford’s valuation. The proposal doesn’t seem to be enough for Brentford, but Manchester United need to get this done.”
“It’s been in the news for far too long, to get to a situation to get to the end of the window and it doesn’t happen, I think that will be an egg-on-the-face situation for Man United unless they go and get someone else.”
“Who have they got waiting in the wings as an alternative? We haven’t heard any names that are close.”
Ferdinand added, “I would be surprised if this deal doesn’t go through, United have allowed it to go public and they are in a position now where they have to make a move to get it over the line.”
“I will repeat myself. he fits the bill for me physically, he is dynamic, scores goals in the Premier League, knows the Premier League, watch this space.”
Mbeumo has attracted other suitors but it’s understood he only wants to join United – a factor that could boost the Red Devils’ chances of acquiring him.
