Head coach Sean Everitt says Edinburgh's season is on the line against Ulster on Friday night - as well as their ambitions for next season.

The capital side know only a win will do if they are to secure a United Rugby Championship play-off spot and a place in the Champions Cup next season.

Other results will also have to go their way if they are to move up from their current position of 10th into the top eight.

"As I said to the team this week, we're playing for our season, but we're also playing for next season because there's an opportunity to get into the Champions Cup and that's what every team would like to do," Everitt said.

"We know the magnitude of the game and we know the outcomes. If we don't, that means that we don't finish in the top eight and then we play in the Challenge Cup next year.

"We're confident that we're moving in the right direction to be able to get a result on Friday."

Edinburgh kept their play-off hopes alive with a bonus-point victory away to Connacht last weekend and Everitt believes operating with little margin for error in the last few weeks stands his team in good stead ahead of the must-win game against Ulster.

"Nothing's really changed over the last six weeks, to be honest with you," Everitt said.

"It's been pressure cooker stuff. Last week was exactly the same as it would be today.

"If we had lost last week, we would have been out. So we've had enough practice at that. But, for me, it's about sticking to the process, sticking to our game model and having composure.

"I think the team has grown over the last probably nine weeks. There's been a lot of learning, but the guys have shown a lot of passion in wearing the Edinburgh jersey and that's what we're looking for."
