eBay Billionaire Taps Civil Rights Lawyer to Lead Inclusive AI Philanthropy
Omidyar Network, the philanthropic organization founded by eBay billionaire Pierre Omidyar, has announced a change in leadership aimed at furthering its mission to expand access to economic opportunities arising from the digital revolution. Michele Jawando, currently the network's president, will assume the role of CEO next month. This appointment was made public through an announcement from the left-leaning organization, which uniquely combines charitable grantmaking with for-profit impact investments.
Jawando brings a wealth of experience to her new position, having previously served as a civil rights lawyer and a former Google executive where she managed public policy partnerships. In her new capacity, she will lead one of the most well-financed technology organizations dedicated to democratizing the development, deployment, and regulation of artificial intelligence, thereby loosening Silicon Valley's concentrated grip on this transformative technology.
Outlining her vision, Jawando emphasized that a primary focus will be to ensure a significantly more diverse array of views, people, coalitions, and voices are involved in shaping the opportunities and rules for the AI era. She articulated a desire for individuals to feel agency and power in this moment, lamenting the common perception that AI is simply something happening *to* people rather than with their input and benefit.
The scale of philanthropic efforts, however, is often dwarfed by the immense financial heft and political influence of AI companies, which are often valued at hundreds of billions of dollars and have successfully lobbied for favorable policies. A recent incident involving the Trump administration's retaliation against Anthropic, an AI company, for its refusal to grant unrestricted military use of its technology, underscores the challenges faced by those seeking to establish broader guardrails for what Jawando calls “really powerful super tools.”
In response to these dynamics, Omidyar Network has refined its strategic focus to address perceived gaps in philanthropy's engagement with the rapidly evolving AI landscape. This includes the establishment of a $30 million generative AI portfolio in recent years. Acknowledging the
