East Africa Unites! Landmark Coast Tourism Conference Charts Future with Youth & Tech Focus

The highly anticipated fourth Uganda-Kenya Coast Tourism Conference, Exhibition, and Familiarization (Fam) Trip is set to take place from October 27 to 29 at the Ocean Beach Resort & Spa in Malindi, Kilifi County. This significant annual gathering has rapidly established itself as a cornerstone event for fostering cross-border collaboration and innovation within East Africa’s travel sector, with the 2024 edition expected to set new benchmarks for participation, content, and overall impact.

The event was officially launched with a spirited ceremony in Mombasa, led by the Consulate-General of Uganda. This launch brought together senior tourism officials, county executives, private sector leaders, and notable personalities, including Ugandan brand ambassador Akothee. Kilifi County Governor Gideon Mung'aro, the Kenya Tourism Board, Uganda Airlines, and leading tour operators were among the key stakeholders who lent their support, highlighting the increasing momentum behind regional tourism integration.

Under the compelling theme, "Leveraging Youth, Innovation & Technology for Responsive & Inclusive Tourism," the conference aims to nurture complementarity rather than competition between Uganda and the Kenya Coast. Uganda’s Consul General in Mombasa, Amb. Paul Mukumbya, emphasized the conference’s remarkable growth, with attendance rising from 200 delegates at its inaugural edition in 2022 to a projected 750 stakeholders this year. This growth attests to its expanding influence as a vital platform for partnership, business development, and knowledge exchange.

Amb. Mukumbya drew particular attention to the transformative role that young people are playing across the tourism value chain. He stated, "As the tourism sector evolves, innovation and technology are shaping its future. Young people—with their fresh ideas and tech-savviness—are uniquely positioned to drive change as travelers, service providers, and entrepreneurs in tourism and hospitality." He highlighted that youth-led innovations, ranging from seamless mobile booking applications and virtual reality travel experiences to AI-driven customer service, are significantly enhancing the industry's efficiency, sustainability, and customer-centricity.

Governor Mung'aro echoed this optimistic view, commending the energy and creativity that youth bring to the sector. He pointed out how tech-enabled startups, sustainable tourism ventures, and smart hospitality solutions are not only improving the visitor experience but also making substantial contributions to environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and economic empowerment across the region. These emerging trends are actively reshaping tourism landscapes and generating new opportunities for communities, especially in destinations that adopt forward-thinking policies.

Dorcus Rukundo Twesigomwe, Business Development Manager at the Uganda Wildlife Authority, encouraged greater Ugandan participation, citing a notable surge in Kenyan visitors to Ugandan national parks. She further stressed the myriad opportunities available for young professionals in critical areas such as research, digital marketing, and social media engagement, all of which are crucial for building resilient and adaptive tourism brands in today’s competitive market.

In the lead-up to the main conference, a series of related activities will take place to maximize the event's impact. Ugandan tourism stakeholders will embark on a Familiarization (Fam) trip along the Kenya Coast from October 22 to 26, designed to explore local attractions and forge new business links. Additionally, a golf tournament at Vipingo Ridge on October 25 will provide further networking opportunities in a relaxed and scenic environment. To facilitate participation, Uganda Airlines has pledged discounted fares for registered conference attendees, aiming to ease access and foster cross-border movement.

These collective activities are carefully designed to build upon the successes of previous editions while effectively addressing the emerging challenges and opportunities within regional tourism partnerships. As the East African tourism sector continues its recovery and innovation post-pandemic, such collaborations are indispensable for driving growth, ensuring inclusivity, and sharing best practices. The Uganda-Kenya Coast Tourism Conference stands as a prime model for how neighboring countries can effectively collaborate to unlock shared potential, promote mutual investment, and celebrate the continent’s diverse attractions. For Africa’s travel professionals, the stakes are high, as embracing new technologies and collaborative mindsets will best position them to capture the next wave of tourism demand. The 2024 conference is envisioned as more than just a meeting of minds; it is a launchpad for actionable ideas, strategic partnerships, and a bold new era of responsive, inclusive tourism across the region.
