Dusty May Calls Out Michigan State's Tradition Following Incident

Published 2 weeks ago2 minute read

Michigan head basketball coach Dusty May appears to be putting the onus on his Big Ten rival when it comes to Sunday's end-of-game skirmish in East Lansing.

On what doubled as Michigan State's senior day, it's tradition for Spartans upperclassmen to kiss the center-court logo before they head off the floor for the last-ever time — which led to an altercation between Tre Hollomon and Wolverine guards Phat Phat Brooks and L.J. Cason when the UM players stood on the logo in the game's final moments.

After the game, May claimed he was completely unaware of the tradition and also questioned its validity during his postgame press conference.

"I didn't know there was a tradition where they're shooting a free throw and we have a guy standing at half court, but there's not a tradition that we can't stand at half court as the game's going on?" the coach snarkily said.

"I'm not familiar with that one. Is that a tradition?" he asked. "Obviously, it took a while, but we're fine with that. They've earned the right for that. The seniors had poured their hearts out. As far as whatever happened, are we not allowed to stand at half court while they're shooting a free throw?"

Hollomon said he warned Michigan's players to move before the shove that set everything off.

"I was just like, man, they're gonna let them kiss the floor. Whether they just move or I gotta move them, so," the junior explained.

Michigan State became B1G champions with the win — finishing out the year with a 26-5 record and season sweep of their hated rival.

Now they'll await their seeding in the NCAA Tournament where they'll look to capture the program's first national championship since the 1999 team led by Mateen Cleaves and Morris Peterson.
