The SEC has come under fire of late for being "overrated" when it comes to its standing as the premier conference in college sports.

Renowned college hoops statistician Ken Pomeroy openly questioned that idea in one of his recent Substacks and CBS' Danny Kanell co-signed it — leading to a response from SEC commissioner Greg Sankey on X (who had time today).

"Just helping explain why the SEC is 'overrated,'" Sankey chimed-in. "30 [wins, 4 losses] vs ACC (wow) ... 14 [wins, 2 losses] vs Big 12 (oh my) ... 10 [wins, 9 losses] vs Big Ten [thumbs up] ... 185 [wins, 23 losses] in non-conf games [cool]."

"I confess SEC teams have a .500 record in games after 1/4/25," the commish laughed. "Sure, let's go with 'overrated' [basketball]!"

Just helping explain why the @SEC is “overrated:”
—30 Ws/4 Ls vs ACC (wow)
—14 Ws/2 Ls vs Big 12 (oh my)
—10 W/9 Ls vs Big Ten ()
—185 Ws/23 Ls in non-conf games ()

I confess @SEC teams have a .500 record in games after 1/4/25 (). Sure, let’s go with “overrated” ()! https://t.co/LcxdSwbLMG

Fans got a kick out of Sankey's post on Wednesday.

"From the top rope," a Georgia fan said.

"Might be the best thing Sankey has ever tweeted," a user commented.

"You want to see a dead body?" another asked.

"Greg Sankey's passive aggressiveness in this tweet has me loling," Katie Windham replied.

"Daniel Kannell got bodied," another fan pointed out.

"get his [expletive] sankey."

"My goodness, the first [time] in history that Greg ever cooked someone," another person tagged Kanell.

In fairness to Pomeroy his argument wasn't about the conference's strength this season but rather how that strength may not translate to NCAA Tournament success, according to the data.

"One takeaway is that it's not unusual for historically great conferences to fail in the tournament. So maybe it's time to sell the SEC," Pomeroy wrote. "Before Greg Sankey throws a fit, it's important to note I'm not disputing the SEC's conference supremacy this season. Just that it's likely the SEC's tournament performance will not be entirely consistent with being the best conference of all-time."

We'll see what ultimately happens later this month once the Madness starts.
