Published 12 hours ago2 minute read

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has extended a helping hand to traders in Adum, Kumasi, who were recently affected by a devastating fire. The blaze, which erupted in the early hours of Friday, March 21, ripped through the bustling business district, leaving numerous shops and stalls in ruins and causing millions of Ghana cedis in losses.

On Tuesday, March 25, Dr. Bawumia visited the scene to assess the damage and express his heartfelt sympathy to the affected traders. During his visit, he announced a donation of GH¢200,000 and 1,000 bags of cement to aid in the rebuilding efforts. He also took the opportunity to meet with the traders, listen to their stories of loss, and offer both emotional and financial support.

"I am donating GH¢200,000 and 1,000 bags to the victims, and I urge private individuals to also support the traders in getting their livelihoods back," Dr. Bawumia stated, calling on fellow Ghanaians and private businesses to contribute to the recovery process.

Dr. Bawumia also commended the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) for their swift and effective response in containing the fire. He described their actions as a “yeoman’s job,” noting that their prompt intervention prevented further loss of property. He highlighted the importance of a well-coordinated emergency response in such critical moments.

Many traders expressed their gratitude for the generous donation, emphasizing that both the financial aid and the cement would be instrumental in helping them start afresh. One affected shop owner commented, "We have lost everything, but this gesture gives us hope."

Dr. Bawumia, accompanied by former government appointees and leaders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), emphasized the urgency of providing relief measures and urged authorities to work diligently to prevent similar incidents in the future. He stated, "This support is just a small way to help you get back on your feet. I will continue to stand with you in any way I can."

As investigations continue to determine the cause of the fire, the community remains hopeful that long-term solutions will be implemented to safeguard their livelihoods from future disasters. Dr. Bawumia also presented an undisclosed amount of money to further support the traders in rebuilding their businesses.
