Dramatic Middleton Rooftop Standoff: Wanted Man Returns to Prison

Emergency services responded to a significant incident in Middleton town centre on Wednesday, July 22, involving a man on the roof of a property. The incident, which began around 1pm, saw a large presence from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) at Market Place, located on Oldham Road.

A police cordon was promptly established at Market Place, leading to road closures from both ends and diverting bus services. Images from the scene showed numerous emergency vehicles, including multiple ambulance crews and specialist units such as the Enhanced Rescue Unit and a Tactical Aid Unit. Later in the afternoon, additional police units arrived, with some officers equipped with shields, indicating a cautious and comprehensive approach to the situation. Police were also observed conducting investigations at a top-floor window of one of the buildings, and a stretcher was seen within the cordon, suggesting preparation for various eventualities.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police confirmed their response to a man on the roof of a property on Oldham Road, Middleton, stating that emergency services and specialist officers were in attendance and thanking the public for their patience. It was understood that the man was wanted by police, adding a layer of urgency to the stand-off.

The tense six-hour stand-off concluded safely shortly before 7pm. A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police confirmed that the man had been successfully escorted off the roof. Following his safe removal, he was assessed for any injuries before being recalled to prison, where he was understood to be wanted on recall.
