Does Dolly Parton Have Kids? Her Family Life With Late Husband Carl | In Touch Weekly
, and not many details were shared about their relationship. After Carl died at the age of 82 in March 2025, fans are likely wondering if the couple ever welcomed kids together.
The “Jolene” singer and Carl never welcomed kids during their nearly 60 years of marriage, and she has been open about why they never wanted to expand their family.
“I didn’t have children because I believe that God didn’t mean for me to have kids so everybody’s kids could be mine, so I could do things like [my charity] Imagination Library,” she explained during an interview in 2020. “If I hadn’t had the freedom to work, I wouldn’t have done all the things I’ve done. I wouldn’t be in a position to do all of the things I’m doing now.”
However, Dolly admitted she and Carl originally assumed they would be parents.
“Early on, when my husband and I were dating, and then when we got married, we just assumed we would have kids,” the “9 to 5” singer told Billboard in 2014. “We weren’t doing anything to stop it. In fact, we thought maybe we would. We even had names if we did, but it didn’t turn out that way. Now that Carl and I are older, we often say, ‘Aren’t you glad we didn’t have kids? Now we don’t have kids to worry about.'”
Dolly revealed she was diagnosed with endometriosis at the age of 35 in her 2017 book, Dolly on Dolly: Interviews and Encounters with Dolly Parton.
According to the Mayo Clinic, endometriosis is “often-painful condition in which tissue that is similar to the inner lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. It often affects the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue lining the pelvis. Rarely, endometriosis growths may be found beyond the area where pelvic organs are located.” Additionally, “endometriosis can cause pain, especially during menstrual periods. Fertility problems also may develop.”
Following her diagnosis, Dolly underwent a partial hysterectomy at the age of 36. She said that the surgery – which prevented her from having children naturally – had a serious impact on her. “Suddenly I was a middle-aged woman. I went through a dark time,” she wrote in the book.
Dolly and Carl got married in May 1966 after two years of dating. They celebrated their 50th marriage anniversary in May 2016 with a vow renewal, and they remained together until his death in March 2025 at the age of 82.
“Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years,” she announced in an Instagram post on March 3, 2025. “Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.”
While Dolly is known for her bubbly and outgoing personality, Carl chose to live a more private life. In 2020, she told Entertainment Tonight that he “does not want to be in the spotlight at all.”
“It’s just not who he is. He’s like a quiet, reserved person and he figured if he ever got out there in that, he’d never get a minute’s peace and he’s right about that,” Dolly continued. “I’ve always respected and appreciated that in him, and I’ve always tried to keep him out of the limelight as much as I can,” she added. “He said, ‘I didn’t choose this world, I chose you, and you chose that world. But we can keep our lives separate and together.’ And we do and we have.”
