Developments in Nakuru County: Boreholes and Bar Closure

The Nakuru County government and the National Bar Owners Association (BAHLITA) are in a standoff with the prison department over a bar operating in Naivasha town. BAHLITA claims the bar, which sells liquor sourced from military barracks at cheaper prices, poses unfair competition to local traders. They threaten to stop paying liquor licenses if the facility isn't closed. BAHLITA national chairman Boniface Gachoka says jobs are at risk and the county government will lose millions due to the impasse. Lakeview MCA Alex Mbugua supports the bar owners, noting the county could lose over Sh100m in liquor licenses. Naivasha Bar Owners association chairman Michael Kamau says they've been ignored by prison bosses, leading to major losses for bars.

Meanwhile, the Nakuru County government is drilling boreholes to address the rising demand for clean drinking water due to the stalled Itare dam construction. Deputy Governor David Kones commissioned a Sh70 million water drilling equipment with the capacity of drilling more than 10 boreholes per month. He says the new approach will ensure more residents have clean and safe drinking water. The county has connected some 15,500 households to clean water and equipped 60 boreholes in the past two years. They plan to drill an additional 70 boreholes over the next two years. The deputy governor said the machine will reduce the cost of drilling a borehole by 30 per cent.

County Executive Committee Member for Water Nelson Maara revealed that the county is experiencing a deficit of about 75, 000 cubic metres of water a day and the Itare dam was to supply over 100, 000 cubic metres of water a day. County Secretary Samuel Mwaura, said with the drilling machine in place, the procurement process will be reduced. The Kenya Kwanza government plans to revive the construction of the Itare dam at an extra Sh5 billion, bringing the total cost to Sh40 billion. The project includes a dam, water treatment plant, pipeline, tunnel, and water distribution improvement works, expected to serve over 800,000 people.
