Published 2 days ago2 minute read

Kenya Sevens initiated their Hong Kong Sevens campaign impressively, defeating Spain, who are currently ranked second in the World Rugby Sevens Series, with a decisive 19-0 victory. The match took place at the Kai Tak Stadium.

Co-captains Samwel Asati and George Ooro played pivotal roles, each contributing a try. Patrick Odongo, noted for his speed, also added to the score, marking his 15th try in his debut HSBC SVNS season.

Kenya's strong start began as Odongo intercepted a pass from Spain within Kenya's own half. He then utilized his speed to evade two defenders and score, giving Kenya an early 5-0 lead after just three minutes.

Following the restart, Kenya regained possession, leading to a lineout. Asati's throw to Kevin Wekesa resulted in a significant carry, followed by an offload to Nygel Amaitsa. The ball was then moved to the left wing and back to Ooro, who forcefully broke through two defenders to score between the posts. Amaitsa's conversion extended Kenya's lead to 12-0 by halftime.

The second half saw continued attacks and defense from both sides. Kenya eventually secured a five-meter scrum near Spain's try line, which Asati capitalized on by sprinting to score. The conversion further increased Kenya's lead to 19-0.

Late substitutions included Vincent Onyala and Brian Tanga, who brought fresh energy to the team, helping to maintain their lead. Ultimately, Kenya secured a 19-0 victory.

This win places Kenya at the top of Group C with three points and a point difference of 19. Great Britain follows, also with three points but a lower point difference of five, after their 12-7 victory over France. France and Spain are currently third and fourth in the group, respectively, without any points.

Kenya's next challenge will be against Great Britain.
