Guidelines for Muslims During Eid Celebrations

In Mombasa, on March 17, 2025, Muslims gathered at the Umu Kulthum Mosque to break their fast, marking a moment of reflection during Ramadan. As Eid al-Fitr approaches, marking the end of Ramadan, it's a time of joyous celebration, prayer, and community. Celebrations should stay within the bounds of decorum, building upon the spiritual gains made during the month of fasting.

Observing proper etiquette during Eid is considered an act of worship, bringing one closer to Allah's mercy. Muslims are encouraged to follow the Sunnah, as taught by the Prophet Muhammad. This includes bathing, dressing in one's best attire, and applying perfume. It's also recommended to eat a few dates before the Eid prayer to signify the end of the fast and to give Zakatul Fitr, a special charitable donation, before heading out for prayer.

Zakatul Fitr serves to purify the fasts observed during Ramadan and ensures that those less fortunate can also participate in the Eid celebrations. Distributing this charity promptly is crucial, allowing it to reach those in need before the Eid prayer. Sheikh Ahmed Mohammed emphasizes that the aim is to ensure that no family is left wanting during this auspicious occasion.

The Eid prayer itself is the most significant aspect of the celebration and should be performed in congregation on the morning of Eid. Muslims are encouraged to attend the prayer at the mosque or designated prayer grounds, arriving early as the prayer takes place after sunrise. Reciting the Takbeer (Allahu Akbar) is a Sunnah often neglected. The Prophetic tradition teaches that the Takbeer should be recited on the night before Eid and during the Eid al-Fitr prayer.

Worshippers are also encouraged to listen to the Eid sermon, which, unlike the Friday sermon, is delivered after the prayer. Eid al-Fitr is a festival to celebrate the end of fasting, and the faithful are encouraged to visit family and friends, exchanging greetings, gifts, and congratulations for completing the Ramadan fast.
