Digital OB Blunder? DCI Amin Denies Lying to Senate Over Albert Ojwang's Final Hours - Nairobi Wire
Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mohammed Amin rejected allegations that he gave a false testimony during a Senate hearing about the killing of teacher Albert Ojwang’.
Amin addressed the doubts about public trust in his ability to lead criminal investigations. He explained that his statement to the Senate was not his personal view or made-up information. Instead, he said it came straight from official police records.
“It is good that I have an opportunity to explain that when I appeared before the Senate, I said that whatever I say before the Senate shall be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” Amin said.
” For those who were following the proceedings, I was sharing with senators the timings of when the suspect was brought to the police station, when he was booked and when the officers went to Mbagathi.”
He said his statements came straight from the digital Occurrence Book kept at the Central Police Station.
“What I was reading was from the records in the digital OB; it was not what the DCI was saying. I was explaining to Kenyans what I was reading from the digital OB,” he explained.
Amin was under increased scrutiny after CCTV footage raised doubts about the timeline he gave to the Senate about teacher Ojwang’s death.
On June 12, 2025, Amin informed senators that officers working at Central Police Station carried out a routine check to assess the welfare of inmates. The Occurrence Book (OB) entries showed police noted all detainees were fine at 1:35 a.m., except Ojwang. He was said to be shouting and banging on the walls in his cell.
“At 0135 hrs, the same PC, Mohamed Hillow Abdullahi, again made an entry in the occurrence book. What did he say? Now duty officer IP Nganga and the cell sentry PC Kimani have visited the cells and found most of them well, apart from the last cell, where he found a prisoner, namely Albert Omondi Ojwang, who was alone in the cell making a lot of noise while kicking the cell walls,” Amin stated while presenting his case.
This version of events has been called into question after Citizen TV aired CCTV footage that raises questions about its accuracy.
The footage captured a different order of events, including when Ojwang arrived at the hospital, suggesting discrepancies between what was recorded in the OB and what actually transpired.
