Digital Darkness: Microsoft Services Crash, Users Left in Limbo Worldwide
Microsoft 365 services, including key platforms like Microsoft Teams and Outlook, are experiencing major disruptions across North America. Users have reported either degraded service functionality or complete inability to access the platforms. By 3:30 p.m., over 15,000 service outages were logged on Down Detector, affecting cities such as Houston, New York City, Los Angeles, Tampa, and Washington D.C.
The outage has impacted several critical services, including Exchange Online, OneDrive, and SharePoint Online, preventing users from sending or receiving emails and disrupting cloud-based collaboration tools.
Cause of the Disruption
Microsoft identified the source of the outage as issues within a portion of dependent service infrastructure in the North America region, which was not “processing traffic as expected.” This infrastructure problem led to widespread errors for users attempting to access emails, cloud storage, and communication services.
The company has restored the affected infrastructure to a healthy state, but acknowledged that additional steps are necessary to fully resolve the impact.
Microsoft’s Response and Ongoing Mitigation
Microsoft is actively working to stabilize services and ensure full functionality. The company stated that further load balancing is required and that it is implementing actions to reroute traffic to healthy sections of infrastructure.
Users were advised that updates on the status of the disruption would be provided by 6 p.m., and Microsoft continues to monitor the situation closely to prevent recurring issues.
