Devastating Tragedy: Five Killed, Three Injured in Horrific County Louth Car Crash
Ireland is in profound mourning following a devastating two-vehicle road collision that tragically claimed the lives of five young people in their early 20s and left three others injured. The harrowing incident occurred at approximately 9pm last Saturday on the L3168 at Gibstown, near Dundalk in County Louth. The nation’s leaders, including Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris, expressed deep shock and sadness, highlighting the tragic impact on families and communities.
The fatal crash involved a Volkswagen Golf and a Toyota Land Cruiser. Police confirmed that the five deceased individuals, three men and two women, were occupants of the Volkswagen Golf, believed to be on their way to Dundalk for a night out. They died at the scene. A sixth occupant in the Golf, a male also in his 20s, survived and is receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. The two occupants of the Toyota Land Cruiser, a male and a female, were also taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, for non-life-threatening injuries.
The victims have been identified as Shay Duffy, 21, and Chloe McGee, 23, both from Carrickmacross, County Monaghan; Alan McCluskey, 23, and Dillon Commins, 23, both from Drumconrath, County Meath; and Chloe Hipson, 21, from Lanarkshire, Scotland. Their loss has sent a wave of grief across their respective communities and beyond, with prayers said at masses nationwide, reflecting the collective sorrow felt throughout Ireland.
Tánaiste Simon Harris stated that a “veil of deep sadness and shock has come over our country,” paying tribute to the rapid and professional response of the emergency services. He acknowledged the extraordinarily difficult and tragic circumstances faced by first responders at the scene. Superintendent Charlie Armstrong of An Garda Síochána echoed these sentiments, expressing condolences to the families of the deceased and commending the exemplary care and respect shown by all emergency personnel, including Dundalk Fire Brigade and HSE paramedics, despite adverse weather conditions.
An extensive investigation into the accident has been launched by An Garda Síochána. The scene on the L3168 at Gibstown remained closed for a comprehensive technical and forensic examination by collision investigators. Post-mortem examinations on the deceased will be carried out as part of the ongoing inquiry. Family liaison officers have been appointed to support each grieving family and keep them updated on the investigation’s progress.
Gardaí have issued an urgent appeal for witnesses or anyone with relevant information. They are specifically requesting anyone who was on the L3168 in the Gibstown area between 8:30pm and 9:15pm last Saturday to come forward. This includes individuals who may have dashcam footage or images from the area during that timeframe. Information can be provided to the investigation team at Dundalk Garda Station on 042 9388400, the Garda confidential line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
Speaking near the crash site, Superintendent Liam Geraghty highlighted the poignant timing of the tragedy, coinciding with the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. He stressed that the event served as a stark reminder of how dramatically circumstances can change on roads in a split second, leading to immense tragedy for families and communities. He also noted a concerning increase in road fatalities, with 157 people having been killed on Irish roads so far this year, a slight rise compared to the same period last year.
