Defection Drama: Kano Gov Yusuf's Secret Meeting With Tinubu Sparks APC Rumors

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf held a closed-door meeting with President Bola AhmedTinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, amid growing political speculation. The high-level discussion focused on pressing issues affecting Kano State, particularly security challenges, major infrastructure projects, and strengthened collaboration between the state and the Federal Government.
According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Governor Yusuf briefed the President on the worsening security situation in parts of Kano, citing recent incidents including the killing of a housewife and her children. He stressed the urgent need for federal intervention to reinforce security operations and safeguard residents. The governor also highlighted the contributions of the Kano State Neighbourhood Watch Corps and called for closer coordination with federal security agencies. President Tinubu reportedly assured the governor of the Federal Government’s commitment to working with Kano to tackle insecurity and promote stability.
Infrastructure Projects and Federal Support
Beyond security, Governor Yusuf discussed his administration’s infrastructure development agenda, thanking the Federal Government for its intervention on the Wujuwuju Road, which he described as critical to economic growth and job creation. He appealed for continued federal support to accelerate ongoing projects in Kano and ensure the state fully benefits from national development programmes and investments.
President Tinubu, according to the statement, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s readiness to partner with Kano State in delivering sustainable development and improving living conditions for residents.
Defection Speculation Raises Political Stakes
The meeting drew significant attention due to widespread speculation about Governor Yusuf’s possible defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The visit marked the governor’s first official meeting with President Tinubu since the President’s return from the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, coming amid weeks of consultations reportedly linked to a potential party switch.
Although no official confirmation has been issued by either the Presidency or the Kano State Government, reports suggest Governor Yusuf has secured the backing of many elected officials, party executives, and support groups within the state. The Kano State House of Assembly is also said to have endorsed the move. Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini warned that remaining in the NNPP could pose political risks, citing internal crises and legal disputes threatening the party’s stability.
A defection would potentially end Governor Yusuf’s long-standing alliance with his political mentor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the NNPP’s national leader. Kwankwaso has publicly denied endorsing any such move. Political analysts note that negotiations surrounding the defection have faced obstacles, including disagreements over the possibility of an automatic ticket for the 2027 elections, further intensifying tensions within Kano’s political landscape.
Governor Yusuf was received at the State House by the Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, underscoring the significance and sensitivity of the discussions.
