Debrah Announces National Sports Talent Initiative Under Mahama
The initiative will systematically identify and nurture athletic talent across all 275 constituencies through a Presidential Special Initiative.
Debrah stated the program targets youth in rural and peri-urban communities, emphasizing multi-sport inclusivity beyond football. “President Mahama’s vision is to hunt talent from the grassroots,” he announced during a speech in Accra. The framework aims to establish structured pathways from local discovery to elite competition.
The announcement referenced the 2025 President’s Cup as evidence of sports’ unifying power. Debrah congratulated Asante Kotoko for their July 6 victory against Hearts of Oak, praising both teams’ sportsmanship. He positioned the new initiative as essential for national development, urging private and public sector collaboration.
Implementation will involve constituency-level scouting networks and development infrastructure. No timeline or budgetary details were disclosed, though Debrah confirmed coordination with the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The program seeks to institutionalize talent identification ahead of the 2028 election cycle.
