Dean denies loss of accreditation in UNN's faculty of dentistry

Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Nigeria (UNN), Enugu State, Prof. Linda Oge Okoye, has said that the institute was not losing accreditation, stressing that the department wants to increase its admission quota.

She stated that there was no truth in the reports on social media that the faculty was on the verge of “losing its accreditation this July due to funding gaps.”

Speaking to The Guardian, Prof. Okoye stated that the faculty, as the only one in the South-East permitted to graduate dental surgeons, was doing well, stressing that it needs support to improve its infrastructure to enable it to admit more students.

“We are not losing accreditation. We want to increase our quota. We are only applying for re-accreditation to increase our quota. Our quota is just 15 students a year. We want to increase it to 60 and that will be possible if we improve on what we have on the ground. We feel we are good and we have whatever it takes to up our admission quota because we have a lot of students seeking admission.”

“So, we have called for the support of well-meaning Nigerians to enable us to get the needed infrastructure. We have lecture halls, buildings and hostels. But we think we need to continue to be the best in this area because the highest approved by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) is 60 students per year. This is what we are aiming at. We have listed some items we need to achieve this.”
