Deadly Crash Horror: Seven Killed on Nigeria's Major Expressway

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a vital transport corridor connecting Lagos to several parts of southwestern Nigeria, continues to grapple with severe safety concerns due to a series of frequent and often fatal road accidents. The latest in this disturbing trend occurred in the early hours of Monday around the Kara section, resulting in seven fatalities and two injuries from a three-vehicle collision.

The tragic crash, which transpired at approximately 12:03 a.m., involved a white HOWO CNG/CIMC ENRIC truck, a white MACK trailer, and a Mitsubishi Canter with registration number JJJ920YA. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ogun State Sector Command, all nine individuals involved were male. Seven victims died instantly at the scene, while the two injured were transported for urgent medical attention. The FRSC's Ibafo Outpost, upon receiving information about the incident, swiftly arrived at the crash site within five minutes. The incident was officially classified as a fatal multiple road traffic crash, with preliminary investigations pointing to speed violation as the probable cause, though further inquiry is underway. The Ogun State Ambulance Service was responsible for evacuating the deceased, and the damaged vehicles were subsequently handed over to the Motor Traffic Division of the Nigeria Police Force in Ibafo.

This latest incident underscores the escalating concerns regarding road safety along the Kara/Ibafo section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, an area that has witnessed numerous accidents in recent weeks. For instance, on July 24, a significant multiple crash at Kara Bridge involving five articulated trucks and a Toyota Sienna claimed one life and injured another. The Lagos State Sector Command of the FRSC attributed this previous incident to speed violation and loss of control, which led to severe gridlock stretching towards Berger, Otedola Bridge, and surrounding roads as emergency services worked to clear the scene. Just three days later, on July 27, another multi-vehicle collision occurred on the expressway, causing prolonged traffic disruptions, although fortunately, no deaths or injuries were confirmed.

Further highlighting the dangers of this corridor, on August 17, a pedestrian was tragically killed near Kara Bridge by a truck reportedly experiencing brake failure. The consistent frequency of these crashes keeps the Kara axis under intense scrutiny, primarily due to the heavy volume of traffic and the prominent presence of articulated vehicles utilizing the Lagos-Ibadan corridor.

In response to these alarming trends, the FRSC has consistently issued warnings emphasizing the critical importance of avoiding excessive speed and adhering to safe driving practices, especially for drivers of articulated vehicles. Reacting to the recent fatal crash, the Ogun State Sector Commander, Oludare Ogunjobi, reiterated this call to action. He urged motorists, particularly those operating articulated vehicles, to avoid excessive speed, maintain adequate safe following distances, and remain constantly vigilant while driving. Furthermore, Mr. Ogunjobi advised motorists to exercise heightened caution when driving at night, pointing out that reduced visibility coupled with potential driver fatigue significantly increases the risk of accidents. The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway's continuous heavy traffic flow between Lagos and various parts of southwestern Nigeria ensures that road safety remains a paramount and recurring concern for all road users.
