Ukraine Drone Strike Kills 13 in Russia as Long-Range Attacks Intensify

At least 13 people were killed and 75 injured after a Ukrainian drone strike hit Nizhnekamsk in Russia's Tatarstan region, according to local authorities, marking one of Kyiv's deadliest attacks on Russian territory.

The city, located more than 1,000 kilometres from Ukraine, is a major industrial centre with oil refineries and petrochemical facilities that have increasingly become targets of Ukrainian long-range strikes. Unverified social media footage reportedly showed a large plume of smoke rising near an oil facility following the attack.

The escalation comes as both Russia and Ukraine have intensified drone and missile attacks against targets far from the front lines. Russian authorities said their forces intercepted 456 Ukrainian drones overnight, while Ukraine's air force reported that Russia launched 126 drones in its own overnight assault, with additional civilian deaths reported in Kharkiv, Belgorod and Kherson. The United Nations has warned that the intensification of long-range attacks has contributed to a significant rise in civilian casualties this year.

Kyiv has increasingly targeted Russian oil and energy infrastructure, with the campaign reportedly contributing to fuel shortages and reduced refining capacity while increasing pressure on Moscow.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said the strikes are intended to raise the cost of Russia's war and push President Vladimir Putin toward negotiations to end the conflict. The latest attacks shows the widening geographical reach of the war and the growing risks to civilians as both sides expand their use of long-range weapons.
