Dan Hurley Opens Up About His Awkward Encounter with Joe Biden at the White House

Published 3 weeks ago2 minute read

While the Connecticut Huskies aren't the same powerhouse this season as they’ve been the last two years, they still remain competitive in the Big East with an 18-8 record heading into a massive showdown with the No. 10 St. John's Red Storm on Sunday afternoon.

However, before that, UConn head coach and controversial figure Dan Hurley, a staple in the sport, appeared on the " How Leaders Lead" podcast and opened up about an awkward moment he shared with former President Joe Biden. This occurred last year when UConn visited the White House following their national championship victory over Purdue, marking Hurley’s second consecutive title.

"Being at the White House, the team leaves, and you're with the president. You take a picture with President Biden, which was super cool, and then the team goes into another room... wherever they do their press conferences. I had about five minutes by myself with Joe Biden because me and him kind of just walked into that room and then the ceremony started. So, I had five minutes by myself with Joe Biden, and I just didn’t know what the hell to talk about... I'm a basketball coach. I just remember it being an awkward, long five minutes. I don’t think he knew much about basketball, and I know nothing about politics."

Dan Hurley + President Joe Biden alone for 5 minutes after winning a National Championship = Pure awkwardness.

Moral of the story? You just can't win 'em all!

The hilarious encounter was something Hurley had never shared publicly until he was asked on the podcast to reveal something from that day he hadn’t opened up about before.

While they now aim for a three-peat, there’s still plenty of work to be done in the coming month to position themselves as strong contenders for another championship in March
