Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, Hope Uzodinma, has disclosed that a committee set up by the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) is pushing for the inclusion of a defined role for traditional rulers on insecurity in the ongoing constitution amendment.
The governor said the role, if included, would give traditional rulers the legal backing to take care of the non-kinetic aspect of tackling insecurity in the country.
Addressing newsmen on Thursday in Abuja, after a meeting of the committee which comprises governors and some traditional rulers, Governor Uzodinma said insecurity has assumed a dangerous trend in the country.
The Imo governor who was flanked by Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Kogi State governor, Ahmed Ododo and others said while the security forces execute the kinetic approach, the traditional rulers should be given a defined role for the non-kinetic aspect of fighting insecurity.
“We had our meeting today (yesterday), they did their presentation and they almost got our findings. We will take our report at the end of the day to the larger body (NGF). If adopted, we will follow up with the National Assembly to ensure that it is co-opted into the new alterations.
“This current situation in the country in terms of insecurity has made it very possible and necessary that the ungoverned spaces and the rural spaces must be manned for efficiency.
“And there is no other way of doing this apart from involving the traditional institution. That is why we are supporting the inclusion of a role for the traditional institutions so that the kinetic approach as is being deployed by the security agencies will be supported by the non-kinetic approach by the traditional rulers for a win-win situation,” he said.
Daily Trust reports that the committee was set up during a meeting of the NGF and traditional rulers in the country last year.
