Crypto Miner TeraWulf Unleashes Huge 1 GW Kentucky AI Data Center, Stock Jumps 11%!

TeraWulf Inc. (Nasdaq: WULF) has announced the acquisition of a significant hyperscale data center development site in eastern Kentucky, a strategic move that immediately resonated with investors, causing shares to climb by as much as 14% on the day. This acquisition underscores TeraWulf's deepening commitment to artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure, positioning the company for substantial growth in these critical sectors.
The newly acquired facility, named the “Muskie Data Campus,” was purchased from Industrial Equity Partners and is strategically located within the 1,000-acre EastPark Industrial Park in northeastern Kentucky. Encompassing approximately 285 acres of owned and controlled land, the site is projected to support an impressive capacity of over 1 gigawatt (GW) for AI and HPC operations, an amount sufficient to power approximately 750,000 homes. The development plan outlines that the first 500 megawatts (MW) of capacity are targeted to become operational in the second half of 2028, with an additional 500 MW scheduled for delivery by the second half of 2030.
Crucial to the campus's viability is the robust power infrastructure being developed by Kentucky Power, an AEP company. This includes the construction of a 345 kilovolt (kV) substation, which will be connected to an existing 765 kV transmission network. At the time of closing, transmission infrastructure and energy service agreements were finalized, establishing a clear and reliable pathway for long-term, large-scale power delivery. Furthermore, the site is already zoned for its intended use, with permitting processes actively underway, indicating advanced stages of development readiness.
Paul Prager, TeraWulf's Chairman and CEO, highlighted the strategic importance of this acquisition, stating, “The defining constraint in this market is no longer computing hardware — it is power, transmission infrastructure, and execution certainty.” He further emphasized that the Muskie campus uniquely combines scalable power, robust transmission infrastructure, development readiness, and a strategic regional positioning that is difficult for competitors to replicate. This marks TeraWulf’s second major digital infrastructure campus in Kentucky, complementing its existing 480-MW Justified Data campus situated in Hancock County. The company distinctively brands itself as a “power infrastructure company that builds digital infrastructure,” a philosophy Prager credits for their ability to secure prime sites like Muskie.
The timing of this deal aligns with TeraWulf's evolving financial landscape, where HPC-related revenue witnessed a significant surge of 117% in the most recent quarter, primarily driven by its Western New York Lake Mariner facility, one of North America's largest HPC campuses. Notably, AI compute revenue surpassed Bitcoin mining revenue for the first time in Q1, signaling a strategic shift. Despite posting a $427 million net loss due to escalating infrastructure investment spending, the company's ambitious data center expansion strategy, initially announced in September of the previous year, is being funded by a substantial $3 billion financing package arranged through Morgan Stanley, with Google providing a backstop for the debt.
The positive market reaction was evident in early New York trading, where WULF shares peaked with a 13.6% increase before settling to an 11% gain, reaching nearly $26 per share, its highest valuation in approximately three weeks. The stock has demonstrated remarkable growth, having more than doubled since January 1, 2026. Moreover, the CoinShares Bitcoin Mining ETF (WGMI), which holds TeraWulf as its third-largest position at 10.86%, also saw a boost, rising 4.5%. TeraWulf's pivot towards AI and HPC infrastructure reflects a broader industry trend among Bitcoin miners, including Hut 8, HIVE Digital, MARA Holdings, and IREN, who are adapting to increasing pressure on Bitcoin mining margins by diversifying into high-demand computing services.
Beyond its financial and strategic implications, the Muskie campus is poised to deliver significant economic benefits to northeastern Kentucky. It is expected to generate numerous construction jobs, foster long-term skilled employment opportunities, and contribute substantial tax revenue to the region, benefiting from the strong support of the Governor's office and local economic development authorities.
