Court Order Shakes NNPP: Dungurawa Barred Amid Party Turmoil

The Kano State High Court has officially affirmed Hon. Abdullahi Zubairu Abiya as the acting state chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) within Kano State. This significant ruling simultaneously upheld the suspension of the former chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, effectively barring him from acting as the NNPP state chairman or interfering in the party's affairs until the substantive suit is fully determined.

Justice Zuwaira Yusuf of High Court No. 13, located on Miller Road, Kano, delivered this interim order following a motion ex-parte dated December 30, 2025. The application was brought forth by concerned members of the NNPP from Gargari Ward in Dawakin Tofa local government area, seeking resolution to the party's escalating leadership crisis. The court's ruling specifically validated the disciplinary actions that led to Dungurawa's suspension by his ward executive. These actions were based on severe allegations, including denigrating the office and person of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, fostering division within the party ranks, and failing to fulfill party dues.

The suit, identified as KN/1218/2026, was formally instituted by Abdullahi Uban-Iya, Shuaibu Hassan, and Auwal Abubakar, acting on behalf of the Local Government Executive Committee of the NNPP. Justice Yusuf explicitly ordered that the former chairman's suspension, which took effect on December 30, 2025, be maintained. Furthermore, the court directed that all relevant court processes be duly served on the respondents and mandated all involved parties to uphold the status quo ante as it existed after December 30, 2025, pending the complete hearing and resolution of the substantive motion. The court has scheduled January 19 for the hearing of the core case against Dungurawa, ensuring the preservation of the current leadership structure within the NNPP in Kano State until a final verdict is reached.

In a related development, the NNPP State Executive Committee had already endorsed Hon. Abdullahi Zubairu Abiya's assumption of the acting state chairman role following Dungurawa's suspension. This endorsement was formally announced during an emergency meeting of the party’s state executive committee, held at the NNPP secretariat in Kano. Barrister Mukhtar, the party’s assistant legal adviser, clarified that Abiya’s emergence was consistent with the provisions of the NNPP Constitution and had now received judicial affirmation through the interim order. He reaffirmed the party's commitment to adhering strictly to the rule of law as the legal proceedings continue.
