Console Games Grab Bag: Break, Whip, and Deliver · An updated classic and some indie fun
is one of those games that feels like a long-lost classic and it does a solid job of offering a 16-bit experience.

I remember renting Super NES games when I was little and often ended up with a game like which isn't great but it certainly offers enough challenge and satisfying gameplay for a weekend full of avoiding homework. You play it by running, double-jumping, and attacking through rather large stages that have many branching paths and tucked-away collectibles that can be rewarding to uncover. I love that you're quite mobile as you can climb certain backgrounds and flip switches to activate features. As you play, you amass an assortment of currencies that you can spend on permanent upgrades like a sword and that adds a sense of reward. However, the overall gameplay is very basic and the boss fights are such pushovers that I retried them less than I did regular level checkpoints. 👊
is a solid retro-inspired experience that feels like a Super NES game but one that you'll soon forget about.
Shadow of the orient gameplay video →2D action game enthusiasts may be intrigued by as a follow-up to the 1988 classic but is it any good?

is one of those games where screenshots make it look awesome; almost as if it could be a Castlevania game but once you play it, you'll experience so much jank that it doesn't quite reach the same level of the Belmonts' iconic adventures. Speaking of which, you wield a whip and as you jump through levels, you can use it to grapple to certain points as well as tear doors and chests asunder which is always gratifying. However, the platforming is so unpredictable and awkward that it can be irritating but I did enjoy the level-up system where you earn crystals that you can allocate to your stats. There are also supplementary mechanics such as jump-kicking, twirling your whip, and pulling enemy shields away but these don't enhance the core gameplay much. In the end, it's fun but feels like it's missing a lot. 🧊
There are good times to be had in but those moments will be among much frustration and clunkiness.
Beyond the Ice Palace 2 gameplay video →I always find genre-mixing intriguing so here's : a shoot 'em up visual novel. Wait; is that right? Let's check it out!

tells one of those stories where you slowly get to know its female-presenting characters through dialogue-heavy scenes as you occasionally make decisions and witness the odd pervy moment. That sort of game doesn't really click with me at all and I didn't find the art to be particularly appealing although it's not bad. However, I'm not going to fault the game for this aspect because I understand that a lot of folks enjoy this sort of thing but I will discuss the shoot 'em up part which is quite entertaining! For starters, it features 3D visuals which is always a treat and as you fly around avoiding projectiles, you'll collect oodles of power-ups that'll have you increase your firepower, deploy satellite turrets, and you can unleash a powerful laser shot whenever its meter is full. The resulting formula is a lot of fun, especially when you're taking on a massive boss and the good news is that you can enjoy this via an arcade mode without the story. 🛩️
Whether you're in it for the story or just the shoot 'em up action via the super-fun arcade mode then you'll certainly dig .
Kamikaze Lassplanes gameplay video →If you're looking for an adorable detective game then here's but how does it perform on Switch? Unfortunately, not good.

In , Diana is seeking adventure and she spontaneously decides to head to the town that her grandmother used to excitedly talk about. When she gets there, she stumbles across mystery after mystery and helps the townsfolk solve their problems while fingering ne'er-do-wells in the process. The characters are anthropomorphic and incredibly cute to boot. For example, the mayor of the sleepy Italian seaside town Borgo Marina even looks like a guinea pig in a suit and has me thinking how dashing Gene would look in one. 🐾
The gameplay has some good variety to it and the detective sleuthing is very enjoyable. You'll start a case after discovering someone's problem then use your pocket-watch compass to turn back time when exploring your surroundings while focusing on spots where something has changed such as a chair being moved. After talking to various characters and finding all of the clues, you enter a mode where you must choose the actions that happened in the correct order and watch it play out and even this portion provides a good level of difficulty. 🏆
Unfortunately, 's biggest problem is its performance on Nintendo Switch. I often experienced character models disappearing, textures popping in, way too many load screens, and it even crashed twice. You'll need a lot of patience to unravel all of the mysteries that Borgo Marina has to offer but if you succeed, there's a lot to enjoy and it's all incredibly cute, too! 🔎
If it wasn't for its poor performance on Switch, would be a must-have detective game in all of its anthropomorphic glory.
On Your Tail gameplay video →Here's a path-building puzzler but there's much more to than meets the eye so let's get delivering and see what's up.

When I started playing , I had fun but it seemed rather generic as all you do is place arrows and jumps on stages then point a car in the right direction and press play to see if you can collect all of the letters and deliver them without falling off the stage. That sounds simple enough and it definitely provides a lovely relaxing time but where the gameplay really becomes exciting is in mastering the stages. Specifically, you get badges for finishing both short and long routes and often, figuring out how to deploy the long route is trickier than the short one so there's a ton of replay value. The presentation is so cute and bubbly, too, so playing levels again and again as you gradually check off all of the campaign's objectives never becomes boring. Throw in a handy hint system and you're left with one well-rounded puzzler. 🐰
If you ever wanted to play as an adorable delivery bunny then will keep a smile on your face as you master its many stages.
