College Hoops Sensation: Illinois Freshman Keaton Wagler Declares for NBA Draft!

Illinois freshman guard Keaton Wagler has officially declared for the NBA draft, as confirmed by his agency, ProMondo Sports, to ESPN. Wagler, who quickly rose to prominence as the No. 5 ranked prospect in ESPN's Top 100, had an exceptional season. He was instrumental in leading the 28-9 Fighting Illini to the Final Four, marking the program's first appearance since 2005. His stellar performance earned him consensus second-team All-American honors and positioned him as a projected lottery selection in the upcoming draft.
Throughout the season, the 6-foot-6 guard demonstrated remarkable all-around play, averaging 17.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game, against just 1.8 turnovers. As the primary offensive catalyst for Illinois, Wagler showcased impressive efficiency, shooting 44.5% from the field and 39.7% from three-point range. His individual achievements were further recognized with prestigious awards, including the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award, First Team All-Big Ten honors, and the Big Ten Freshman of the Year title.
A native of Shawnee, Kansas, Wagler's journey to national notoriety was swift and unexpected. Despite a relatively quiet recruitment process, during which he won two high school state championships, he quickly impressed the Illini coaching staff upon his arrival. He became an indispensable part of the team, starting all 37 games. His season was highlighted by a remarkable 46-point performance on the road against Purdue in January, and a crucial 25-point outing against Iowa that secured Illinois's spot in the Final Four last month.
Wagler's rapid ascent as an NBA prospect is largely attributed to his combination of positional size, plus shooting ability, and quick decision-making, which enables him to contribute to winning basketball at both guard positions. NBA executives are reportedly very optimistic about his developmental trajectory, his innate feel for the game, and his long-term upside. They frequently cite his potential for physical and ball-handling improvement as a realistic pathway to reaching a star ceiling in the league.
Prospective NBA teams and fans will be looking forward to the upcoming draft events, with the NBA draft lottery scheduled for May 10, and the draft combine set to begin on May 11.
