Cocktail bar: Whisky highball - The Standard Evewoman Magazine

This delicious cocktail is a crisp and clean serve that allows the whisky’s character to shine. The well-known blend of whisky and Coke has a documented history dating back to 1907. An employee of the U.S. Bureau of Chemistry and Soils, while visiting the American South, encountered the drink, which a local proprietor referred to as a Coca-Cola highball. This became the earliest recorded mention of the iconic combination. Over time, this simple pairing became a popular way to introduce new drinkers to bourbon, as noted by Dave Pickerell, former master distiller for Maker’s Mark. Its approachable taste made it a common starting point for many.
INGREDIENTS:
Whiskey (Red or Black label) (50ml)
Coca-Cola (125ml)
Lime wedge or slice (for garnish).
HOW TO MAKE IT:
Start by filling a tall glass with ice cubes. Then pour in the whisky—either Red or Black Label, depending on your preference. Top up the mixture with Coca-Cola and stir gently. Once done, garnish the cocktail with a lemon slice or lime wedge. Garnishing is not mandatory, but it makes the cocktail more visually appealing.
There are several variations of the Johnnie and Coca-Cola Highball. The versatility of the classic whisky and Coke largely stems from the diverse range of whiskies that can be paired with cola.
The most iconic version is the Jack and Coke, which specifically uses Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey. Beyond this, any bourbon can be used, leading to common pairings, such as Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark, or Bulleit with Coke.
For those seeking a spicier kick, rye whisky offers a more assertive flavour profile. Even Scotch whisky finds its way into the mix, adding an interesting smoky twist. Lighter and often fruitier notes can be achieved by opting for Irish whiskey, such as Jameson. Finally, with their growing global appeal, Japanese whiskies are also increasingly being enjoyed in this simple highball.
