Citi Business Forum: We're capable of meeting Ghana's poultry needs - Poultry Farmers Association

Published 1 day ago2 minute read

The Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association has reiterated its readiness to meet Ghana’s domestic poultry demand if given the necessary policy and financial support from the government.

Speaking at the Agribusiness Forum on Thursday, June 19, Management Committee Chairman of the association, Kwame Ntim Duodo, noted that the current trade regime continues to frustrate local producers due to the over-liberalisation of poultry imports.

According to him, the local poultry industry has the capacity to supply the Ghanaian market but struggles to compete with cheaper imports, which have contributed significantly to the sector’s decline.

He suggests that reducing the rate of over-liberalisation will enable local poultry farmers to scale up production and compete fairly with foreign produce.

“We are ready, we are capable, together with other poultry farmers’ associations, of meeting the poultry needs of the Ghanaian population from the poultry side, if we have the support.

“We are at the losing end because over-liberalisation of imports led to the collapse of the poultry industry. We are coming with a proposal for the gradual reduction of importation and improving the local production over a period of time, maybe five years. We can set the target,” he said.

The event held under the theme “Harnessing Agribusiness Potential for Economic Growth: Expanding Agricultural Frontiers and Maximising Productivity in Ghana,” brought together key stakeholders from across the agricultural value chain to discuss practical strategies for revitalising Ghana’s agribusiness sector.
