Albert Ojwang Murder Probe: IPOA Office Declared Crime Scene, Senior Police Grilled

The tragic death of blogger Albert Ojwang in police custody has unfolded into a complex and multi-layered investigation, drawing scrutiny to top police officials and even the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA). The incident began when Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Eliud Lagat, who was later adversely linked to Ojwang's murder, lodged a complaint against the blogger on June 4. Ojwang had allegedly posted defamatory content against Lagat on X, prompting the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)'s serious crimes unit to intervene.
On June 7, five DCI officers arrested Ojwang at his home in Lida Centre, Homa Bay county, in the presence of his family. He was first booked at Mawego Police Station before being transferred to Nairobi the same day. Upon arrival in the capital past 9 pm, Ojwang was booked at the Central Police Station and confined alone in a cell, where he met his painful death hours later. In an apparent attempt to conceal the truth, police initially claimed the 31-year-old had sustained fatal injuries by hitting his head on a cell wall. However, an autopsy conducted on June 10 unequivocally contradicted this narrative, confirming that Ojwang had been severely assaulted, evidenced by visible bruises on his head and body, compression marks on his neck, and blood residues in his ears and face.
The revelation of Ojwang's brutal death sparked nationwide outrage, intensifying pressure on DIG Eliud Lagat to resign and face justice. Lagat, who had stepped aside on June 16 due to the matter, was subsequently grilled by IPOA on Thursday, June 19. His testimony, however, was taken off-camera, leaving the contents of his account shrouded in mystery. In connection with the murder, at least 20 police officers have been questioned. Among those taken into custody are Central Police OCS Samson Talam and Police Constable James Mukhwana, who was the sentry manning the cells when Ojwang was booked.
A critical turning point in the investigation came with Police Constable James Mukhwana's explosive dossier to IPOA. In his statement, Mukhwana alleged that the order to assault Ojwang originated from DIG Lagat and was executed by OCS Talam through junior officers at Central Police Station. He further revealed that four remandees were contracted to beat up the blogger as
