CinemaCon Unleashes Shocking Trailers & Dire Warnings for Hollywood's Future!

CinemaCon recently served as a major platform for exciting announcements from two acclaimed directors, Steven Spielberg and Robert Eggers, showcasing their distinct upcoming projects: Spielberg's highly anticipated return to blockbuster sci-fi with "Disclosure Day" and Eggers' dive back into period horror with "Werwulf."
Steven Spielberg made a significant appearance at CinemaCon, premiering the trailer for "Disclosure Day," a film marking his eagerly awaited return to summer blockbuster filmmaking after a decade focused on personal dramas like "The Fabelmans" and prestige fare such as "West Side Story." The movie, shrouded in secrecy, delves into a classic Spielbergian genre: visitors from another planet and an extensive government conspiracy to conceal their arrival. This theme resonates with his past successes, including "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," and "War of the Worlds."
The stellar cast for "Disclosure Day" includes Emily Blunt as a weather reporter with an otherworldly connection, Josh O’Connor portraying a man possessing contact evidence, and Colin Firth as a nefarious bureaucrat determined to silence the protagonists. Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo complete the ensemble. The script was penned by David Koepp, known for his work on "Jurassic Park." Spielberg expressed a profound personal connection to the sci-fi premise, stating it’s "closer to truth" than one might imagine. He recounted a lifelong curiosity about the night sky and cited increasing evidence of unidentified flying objects, mentioning a 2017 New York Times report on a secret Pentagon program investigating such sightings. Spielberg noted that public acceptance of the possibility of intelligent life has grown, a belief he has held for nearly 50 years since "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." He promised that "Disclosure Day" would both answer and provoke many questions, likening the viewing experience to needing "a seat belt."
The footage presented at CinemaCon indeed showcased Spielberg's signature sweep, featuring intense action sequences like Blunt and O’Connor crashing through a farmhouse while evading government agents and later climbing onto a speeding train. Glimpses of the aliens were fleeting but impactful: a mysterious ship materializing from an ink-black sky and a non-human hand reaching out. Beyond the film's promotion, Spielberg received a "one-time honor, the America 250 award," from Motion Picture Association CEO Charlie Rivkin, an emotional moment followed by a conversation with Colman Domingo. It marked his first visit to the exhibition industry trade show, a visit he promised would not be his last.
During his appearance, Spielberg also used the platform to advocate for the future of cinema. He made a heartfelt plea to studios to extend the exclusive theatrical windows before films debut on home entertainment platforms. He specifically commended Universal, the studio behind "Disclosure Day," for its decision to increase cinema run times from as few as 17 days to 45. While appreciative, he audaciously pushed for even longer windows, asking, "Do I hear 60 days? Do I hear 120 days?" Furthermore, Spielberg stressed the critical importance of studios continuing to invest in original films, like "Disclosure Day," rather than solely relying on reboots, sequels, and spinoffs. He warned, "If all we make is known, branded IP, we’re going to run out of gas," emphasizing the need for more original visual storytelling. "Disclosure Day" is set to open on June 12, serving as a test case for whether audiences will embrace new and original cinematic narratives.
Meanwhile, director Robert Eggers unveiled a first look at his latest movie, "Werwulf," at CinemaCon, marking his return to the period horror genre after his successful 2024 creature feature "Nosferatu." Scheduled for release on December 25, exactly two years after "Nosferatu," "Werwulf" is a 13th-century werewolf tale co-written by Eggers and Sjon, his collaborator on "The Northman."
The film's logline teases a chilling narrative: "In 13th-century England, a mysterious creature stalks a foggy countryside as local folklore becomes a terrifying reality for the villagers." The cast sees several actors re-teaming with Eggers from "Nosferatu," including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who stars as the titular lycanthrope, Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson. Additional cast members include Jack Morris, Jan Bijvoet, Ritchi Edwards, and Bodhi Rae Breathnach.
The trailer for "Werwulf" showcased stylistic elements reminiscent of Eggers' previous works, featuring stark black-and-white shots of mauled corpses, desecrated graves, and terrified townsfolk haunted by an unseen beast. A striking moment revealed a nude Aaron Taylor-Johnson convulsing and transforming into the werewolf, spit filling his fanged mouth, though his complete monstrous form was intentionally withheld. Lily-Rose Depp, who rose to prominence in "Nosferatu," further cemented her "scream queen" status with several pained shrieks in the new footage.
Eggers' "Werwulf" enters a varied landscape for Universal's classic monster movies, which have seen mixed results in recent years. While films like "The Invisible Man" (2020) were hits, grossing $144 million on a modest $7 million budget, others like last year’s "Wolf Man" ($35 million box office) and vampire films "Abigail" (2024) and "Renfield" (2023) received more lukewarm responses. Robert Eggers has firmly established himself as a horror auteur, acclaimed for his distinctive vision in films like "The Witch" (2015), "The Lighthouse," and the period action epic "The Northman." "Werwulf" promises to further solidify his unique contribution to the genre.
