Chipolopolo's Heroic Daka Snatching Draw Against Mali in AFCON Thriller!

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group A opening match on Monday night, December 22, 2025, saw Mali and Zambia battle to a dramatic 1-1 draw at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca, Morocco. Zambia's forward, Patson Daka, became the hero for the Chipolopolo, striking deep into injury time to snatch an unlikely point after Mali had largely dominated the contest.
Mali broke the deadlock just after the hour mark, in the 64th minute. Following a quick corner, Auxerre forward Lassine Sinayoko displayed quick reactions after his initial effort was blocked, calmly firing home from close range to give his side a deserved lead. Throughout the match, the West Africans had controlled possession, pressed higher up the pitch, and consistently created the clearer goal-scoring opportunities. However, they repeatedly failed to convert their superiority into goals earlier in the game.
A golden opportunity for Mali to take the lead came late in the first half when they were awarded a penalty following a VAR review. Zambia's Mathews Banda was adjudged to have fouled Nene Dorgeles inside the penalty area. Despite the clear chance, El Bilal Touré’s subsequent spot-kick was brilliantly saved by Zambia's goalkeeper, Willard Mwanza, ensuring the scores remained level at the halftime break and keeping his team in the game.
As time ticked away and Mali seemed poised to secure a victory, Zambia pushed forward in a desperate search for an equalizer, relying more on hope than sustained tactical pressure. This gamble ultimately paid off in spectacular fashion in the 91st minute. Leicester City striker Patson Daka launched himself at a teasing cross delivered by Mathews Banda – who had redeemed himself after the earlier penalty concession – and powered home a header, securing a crucial point for Zambia in the second minute of added time.
The 1-1 draw leaves both Zambia and Mali with one point each from their opening Group A fixtures. Looking ahead, Mali is set to face Morocco next in Rabat on Friday, while Zambia, still seeking their first AFCON win since lifting the trophy in 2012, will turn their attention to their upcoming match against Comoros. The dramatic finish underscored the resilience of the Zambian team, while Mali will likely reflect on their missed opportunities despite a dominant performance.
