Chinese firm secures $80m loan to expand off-grid solar in Nigeria
Sun King, the world’s largest off-grid solar company, has reportedly secured an $80 million loan to expand electricity access across Nigeria, according to a report by Bloomberg on Thursday.
Bloomberg report that the company secured the loan of $80 million from the International Finance Corp. and Stanbic IBTC Bank Ltd.
Sun King, formerly known as Greenlight Planet, plans to use the funds to provide off-grid solar electricity to 4 million households in Nigeria over the next four to five years, as reported by Bloomberg.
The company has already delivered solar power to 2 million Nigerian homes, according to Chief Financial Officer Krishna Swaroop.
“What’s really exciting about this is that it’s a local-currency facility” so the company doesn’t have to take foreign-exchange risk,” Anish Thakkar, co-founder of Sun King, told Bloomberg.
“It allows us to provide the most affordable financing to customers,”
