Children of Blood and Bone Trailer Unveils Epic African Fantasy as Tems Leads Historic Soundtrack

Paramount Pictures has released the first teaser trailer and behind-the-scenes featurette for Children of Blood and Bone, bringing Tomi Adeyemi's bestselling fantasy novel to the big screen. The film is set in the mythical West African kingdom of Orïsha and is widely regarded as one of the most ambitious African-inspired fantasy productions ever made.

The film is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, whose previous work includes The Woman King. According to Paramount Pictures' official trailer release, the adaptation will arrive in cinemas and IMAX worldwide on 15 January 2027.

One of the film's biggest milestones is the appointment of Tems as Executive Music Producer and Curator of the official soundtrack. The Grammy Award-winning Nigerian singer also contributed three original songs, while her hit single "Me & U" features prominently in the teaser.

Director Gina Prince-Bythewood revealed that the music of Tems and Burna Boy helped shape her creative vision while writing the screenplay. Burna Boy also serves as Executive Music Consultant, alongside fellow Nigerian stars Fireboy DML, BNXN (Benson) and Ayra Starr.

The teaser introduces audiences to the magical world of Orïsha through sweeping landscapes, ancient kingdoms and spectacular visual effects. It follows Zélie Adebola, played by South African actress Thuso Mbedu, as she embarks on a mission to restore magic to her people after it is stolen by a ruthless monarchy.

The cast features some of the biggest names in Black cinema. Alongside Mbedu are Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg, Tosin Cole, Cynthia Erivo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Regina King, Idris Elba and Viola Davis.

Nigeria is also strongly represented, with veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, singer Ayra Starr, Temi Fagbenle, Shamz Garuba and Bukky Bakray all appearing in the production. For Ayra Starr, the film marks her Hollywood acting debut.

According to the official behind-the-scenes featurette, much of the film was shot across South Africa using natural landscapes, while Oscar-winning production designer Hannah Beachler created elaborate sets inspired by African architecture and culture.

The filmmakers also drew heavily from African traditions throughout the production. Costume design, hairstyling, body art and combat choreography were inspired by cultures across the continent, including Yoruba artistic traditions, helping create an authentic visual identity for the fantasy world.

Based on Tomi Adeyemi's internationally acclaimed novel, the story follows Zélie as she joins her brother Tzain and royal allies Amari and Inan to fight against oppression and restore magic to Orïsha. For Africa's creative industry, Children of Blood and Bone represents more than another Hollywood release. The combination of African storytelling, Nigerian music and a predominantly Black cast makes the film a landmark moment for African representation in global fantasy cinema and another sign of the continent's growing influence on the international entertainment industry.
