Chelsea Turmoil: Rosenior Sacking Sparks Fan Fury and Club Discord

Chelsea Football Club recently endured a severe period of struggle, suffering their fifth consecutive Premier League loss last night at the American Express Stadium against Brighton and Hove Albion. This defeat extended their winless streak in the English top-flight since the first week of March, marking a club-record high of five Premier League games without scoring a goal. Brighton secured a 3-0 victory with goals from Ferdi Kadioglu, Jack Hinshelwood, and Danny Welbeck, propelling them to 6th position in the EPL table and closer to a UEFA Europa League spot.
The abysmal performance sparked strong reactions from Chelsea fans, many of whom called for the immediate sacking of then-head coach Liam Rosenior. Fans like Miracle Okafor expressed frustration, stating, “Brighton dominated us from start to finish; we had no chance to score a goal today. We haven't scored in five games. This man [Rosenior] must get sacked.” Other supporters, such as Daniel Alexander, criticized the team's inability to register a shot on target against Brighton, deeming it “preposterous,” while Mekele Gaeha pointed out the lack of a competent striker and compared Rosenior's situation to Frank Lampard's past dismissal for less severe offenses. Concerns were also raised about squad management, including the decision to loan out Tyrique George instead of keeping him alongside Alejandro Garnacho.
Following the 3-0 hammering by Brighton, which Rosenior himself described as unacceptable, questioning the players' desire and professionalism, he was dismissed less than 24 hours later. This abrupt end came just three months into the six-and-a-half-year deal he had signed in January. First-team coach Calum McFarlane was subsequently put in charge as interim head coach for the remainder of the season, with the rest of Rosenior's backroom staff remaining in their positions.
Interim head coach Calum McFarlane confirmed that there have been no “clear the air” talks among the players and coaching staff regarding Rosenior's sacking or the team's recent struggles. McFarlane's immediate focus is entirely on the upcoming FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United, which represents Chelsea's last opportunity to salvage their season. He emphasized the importance of a singular focus on the game plan, stating, “What's gone on in the past doesn't need to be spoken about. It's everything geared towards Sunday.” This current run of five consecutive Premier League losses without scoring is Chelsea's worst since 1912, severely impacting their chances of qualifying for next season's Champions League and potentially affecting their compliance with UEFA's financial regulations.
McFarlane, whose only prior senior management experience consisted of two games in January following Enzo Maresca's sacking, was promoted to the first-team staff by Rosenior. He expressed respect for Liam Rosenior, acknowledging their good relationship and his personal disappointment that it “hasn't worked out.” Looking ahead to the Wembley clash, McFarlane was hopeful for the fitness of Cole Palmer and João Pedro, who missed the Brighton game. However, he confirmed that Estêvão is out for the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury.
