OpenAI Removes ChatGPT Text Chat Limits for Free Users, Introduces GPT-5.6 Models
OpenAI is removing text-based chat limits for all ChatGPT users, now powered by new GPT-5.6 models. Free and Go users get GPT-5.6 Luna with a 'Think' button, while Plus and Pro subscribers access an upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol and a 'thinking slider' for enhanced reasoning. These updates promise improved accuracy and more robust responses across the platform.
OpenAI has announced major updates to ChatGPT, including the removal of limits on text-based conversations for Free and Go users following the platform's milestone of more than one billion weekly users.
The update introduces GPT-5.6 Luna as the default model for Free and Go accounts, replacing GPT-5.5. Users on these plans will also receive a new "Think" button that enables higher-reasoning capabilities for more complex prompts, while existing limits on file uploads, images, voice and image generation remain unchanged.
ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers will gain access to GPT-5.6 Sol, a model optimized for fast, everyday tasks such as answering questions, web research, writing, planning, advice and decision-making.
According to OpenAI, the model is designed to provide more concise and reliable responses. The company noted that GPT-5.6 Sol is separate from the models powering Codex and Work, which will continue to operate without changes.
In addition to the new model, Plus and Pro subscribers will receive enhanced premium features as part of the latest rollout. OpenAI said the updates are aimed at improving speed, reasoning and the overall ChatGPT experience across different user tiers.
The announcement reflects the company's continued push to expand access to advanced AI tools while tailoring capabilities to the needs of both free and paid users.
