ChatGPT Goes Free in India: OpenAI's Strategic Move to Conquer a New Market

OpenAI has announced a significant promotional offer for users in India, making its ChatGPT Go plan available free of charge for one year. This initiative, which began on November 4, aims to bolster the company's presence and user base in one of its most critical markets. The limited-period offer extends to both new users who sign up during the promotion and existing ChatGPT Go subscribers in India, granting them 12 months of complimentary access to the service.
ChatGPT Go was initially introduced in India in August as OpenAI's most economical paid subscription, priced at less than $5 per month. Following its successful launch in India, the service expanded its reach to Indonesia and subsequently to 16 additional countries across Asia earlier this month. The decision to prioritize India stems from its immense potential; as the world's most populous nation, it boasts over 700 million smartphone users and more than a billion internet subscribers, presenting a fertile ground for AI adoption.
OpenAI has been strategically investing in its Indian operations, having established a New Delhi office in August and actively building a dedicated local team to further its expansion efforts. According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, India holds the position of the company's second-largest market globally, trailing only the United States. Despite this substantial user engagement, monetizing ChatGPT's paid plans in the country has presented a challenge. Data from Appfigures revealed that while the ChatGPT app accumulated over 29 million downloads in the 90 days preceding August, it generated only $3.6 million in in-app purchases during that period.
The ChatGPT Go plan offers enhanced capabilities compared to the free version, providing users with 10 times more usage for generating responses, creating images, and uploading files. It also incorporates an improved memory function, leading to more personalized and contextually relevant interactions. Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, expressed optimism regarding the initiative, stating, "Since initially launching ChatGPT Go in India a few months ago, the adoption and creativity we’ve seen from our users has been inspiring. We’re excited to see the amazing things our users will build, learn, and achieve with these tools."
OpenAI's aggressive push in India comes amid increasing competition from other major AI players. Rivals such as Perplexity and Google are also keen to capitalize on India's large and youthful user base. Perplexity, for instance, has forged a partnership with Airtel to provide free Perplexity Pro subscriptions to the telecom operator's vast network of 360 million subscribers. Similarly, Google has rolled out a free one-year AI Pro plan specifically for students in India.
Further underscoring its commitment to the Indian market, OpenAI is scheduled to host its DevDay Exchange developer conference in Bengaluru on November 4. This event is anticipated to feature India-specific announcements tailored for local developers and enterprises. OpenAI has identified India as one of the fastest-growing markets for ChatGPT, with millions of users interacting with the chatbot daily. A recent update from Nick Turley confirmed upcoming exciting announcements for Indian users in the weeks following October 28, leading up to the DevDay Exchange event.
