Chaos Ensues: Greater Manchester's Bee Network Crippled by Massive Driver Strikes

Bus passengers across Greater Manchester are facing significant travel disruption next week as over 2,000 members of the Unite union, working under the Bee Network, are set to undertake a coordinated strike over pay. This industrial action marks the first wave of strikes to hit the Bee Network since buses were brought under public control by Andy Burnham.
The strikes are scheduled to run from Friday, September 19, to Monday, September 22. Passengers should also be aware that some late-night services on Thursday, September 18, and very early morning services on Tuesday, September 23, may also be affected. The industrial action will result in the cancellation of approximately two-thirds of Bee Network bus services, including some school routes, across all boroughs except for Bolton and Wigan, which will operate as normal.
The dispute centers on pay offers that Unite deems "unsatisfactory" in light of "years of low pay" and the "ongoing cost of living crisis," with inflation currently at 3.8%. Specifically, around 1,000 drivers at Stagecoach (Oldham, Stockport, Middleton depots) and another 1,000 workers at Metroline Manchester (Sharston, Hyde Road, Ashton, Wythenshawe depots) have rejected a 3.5 per cent pay offer. Additionally, 110 members at First Bus Rochdale turned down a six per cent pay offer. The bus operators have expressed their disappointment but remain "open" to discussions to prevent the strike.
The timing of these strikes is particularly impactful, as they coincide with a weekend of major events in the region. Manchester United is scheduled to host Chelsea at Old Trafford on September 20, while Peter Kay performs at the AO Arena and Tom Grennan plays at Co-op Live on September 19. Local leaders have voiced concerns about the impact on residents and visitors. Labour councillor Phil Burke, lead member for transport at Rochdale council, supports the drivers' right to strike but worries about constituents missing work, hoping for a swift resolution. Similarly, Labour councillor Anthony McCaul, Deputy Executive Member for Environment, Clean Air and Transport at Manchester council, emphasized the importance of bus drivers and hoped an agreement could be reached to mitigate the strikes' impacts on residents, businesses, and visitors.
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has urged passengers to plan ahead, allow extra time for travel, and avoid peak times (7 am to 9 am and 4 pm to 6 pm) if possible, as local roads and other public transport will be busier. To help mitigate the disruption, TfGM has announced that customers with 7-day, 28-day, term-time, annual bus passes, or concessionary passes (including Our Pass) will be able to use their tickets and passes on all Metrolink trams on strike days. Trams and trains will run as normal, as will some buses in parts of Greater Manchester and the free bus in Manchester city centre.
TfGM Chief Network Officer Danny Vaughan reiterated that bus operators are responsible for staff pay and conditions, encouraging continued talks. He expressed regret for the anticipated disruption and assured that TfGM teams would be assisting passengers and providing information. More details are available on the Bee Network website or by contacting the Bee Network Contact Centre.
