Chaos at Ablekuma North rerun: Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah reveals main targets of assault
Media personality, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah has revealed that a group of politically motivated thugs had deliberately targeted to assault two journalists and three politicians during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun held on Friday, July 11, 2025.
According to the outspoken broadcaster, his intel indicates that himself- Okatakyie Afrifa Mensa, Akwasi Nsiah of Adom TV, Hawa Koomson, Dennis Miracles Aboagye and Weija/Gbawe MP, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, were the targets prompting some of them to stay away from the polling centres on security grounds.
Speaking on the issue on his "For The Records show" on Saturday, July 12, 2025, Okatakie Afrifa-Mensah, said the group had planned attacks on these individuals due to their perceived influence and outspoken nature.
“Upon reflection, I realized the advice given to me was good. That is why I decided not to visit any of the 19 polling stations,” he stated. He added that a respected member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) had privately urged him to stay away from the area, warning that his presence could escalate tensions or result in his arrest.
Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah emphasized that his decision to avoid the polling centres was not out of fear but based on sound counsel. “I didn’t go not because I’m afraid of anyone. They know the work we are doing and the effect it is having on them. Thanks be to God we are not fools – we won’t give them the opportunity to cripple us,” he said.
He also alleged that the government had intentions of jailing him and others like him, describing the political climate as hostile toward dissenting voices within the country.
“The thugs were not targeting ordinary voters. They came for those in the NPP they consider to be bold and troublesome. But we are ready—we have three and a half years ahead to fight back,” he added, referencing the lead-up to the 2028 elections.
The Ablekuma North constituency has recently been in the spotlight due to heightened political tensions, with both the NPP and NDC trading accusations over the conduct of the rerun election.
Some thugs assaulted the former Minister for Fisheries and Aqua Culture, Hawa Koomson, Deputy National Organiser Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, and a Journalist into their with the Multimedia group.
The Electoral Commission is yet to comment on the incident, while police have not confirmed any arrests related to the alleged plot.
