CHAOS: Abuja-Kaduna Train Derails, Passengers Stranded Amidst Panic and Injuries

A passenger train operating on the bustling Abuja-Kaduna corridor experienced a derailment on Tuesday morning, sparking widespread panic among those on board. The incident, which occurred around 11:00 AM at approximately KM 49 between Kubwa Station and Asham Station near Jere town, left several cabins overturned and hundreds of passengers stranded.
Initial reports from passengers described the scene as chaotic, with individuals scrambling for safety. While some early accounts suggested no injuries or fatalities, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) later confirmed that six passengers sustained minor injuries, though no fatalities were recorded. Emergency services, including medical personnel, nearby hospitals, and a full complement of security operatives, were swiftly mobilised to the site to provide assistance and ensure the safe evacuation of all passengers back to Abuja.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) officially confirmed the derailment, with its Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, issuing statements to appeal for calm and assure the public that efforts were underway to restore normalcy. The NRC announced the immediate suspension of train operations on the Abuja-Kaduna corridor, stating that services would remain suspended until investigations are concluded and safety is fully assured. Technical teams from the NRC and officials from the NSIB have been deployed to the scene to determine the exact cause of the derailment and implement preventive measures. Mr. Opeifa dismissed speculations of poor maintenance, asserting the corporation's adherence to safety standards, and confirmed that refunds had been processed for affected passengers.
The Kaduna State Government, through its Commissioner-designate for Information, Ahmed Maiyaki, also responded to the incident. Governor Uba Sani, currently abroad, expressed sympathy to the affected passengers and directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the Ministry of Local Government Affairs to coordinate evacuation, provide medical care, and offer psycho-social support. The government assured citizens that investigations were underway and that they were working closely with federal agencies to monitor the situation and minimise the impact.
This derailment is the latest in a series of disruptions on the Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor, a route vital for many commuters, often seen as a safer alternative to the highway plagued by security issues. The corridor has faced multiple challenges in recent years, including a deadly terrorist attack in March 2022 and a 'hot axle' incident just last week, which temporarily affected services. While Tuesday's derailment has not been linked to sabotage, it has reignited concerns about the reliability and safety of Nigeria's rail infrastructure. The NSIB has formally opened an investigation, committing to a transparent process to identify root causes and issue safety recommendations to prevent recurrence.
