Champions League Heartbreak: Super Falcons Star Can't Rescue PSG From Embarrassing Exit
)
Jennifer Echegini opened her Champions League goal account for the season in Paris Saint-Germain's final game of their UEFA Women's Champions League campaign. Despite Echegini's early strike, her goal failed to propel Paris Saint-Germain to victory, as they were held to a frustrating draw by Christie Uchebe's Benfica. This result effectively sealed PSG's exit from the tournament without securing a single victory throughout their campaign.
The match itself saw Echegini find the back of the net in the 5th minute, giving PSG an initial lead. However, Benfica managed to restore parity in the 33rd minute, with Carole Costa converting a penalty. Later in the 70th minute, Anais Ebayilin appeared to have scored for PSG, but her goal was subsequently disallowed by VAR, ensuring the match concluded in a draw. Prior to this game, PSG had already been eliminated from the competition, having only managed to secure one point, and were playing solely for pride against another side, Benfica, that had also been eliminated.
The draw meant that the French side endured the entire tournament without tasting victory. While Jennifer Echegini delivered a notable individual performance in the game, completing six out of seven dribbles and winning eleven out of fifteen attempted duels, her compatriot, Christie Uchebe, remained an unused substitute for Benfica. Elsewhere in the competition, Barcelona successfully defeated Chiamaka Nnadozie's former club to secure the top spot in the league table. Lyonnes, Chelsea, and Bayern also completed the rest of the top four, thereby guaranteeing their places in the next round of the tournament.
The eight teams that finished between 5th and 12th position are slated to enter the playoffs to determine further progression. These teams include prominent clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, Wolfsburg, Paris FC, Atletico Madrid, and OH Leuven.
