Chad Suspends Visas for Americans in Retaliation for US Travel Ban

The Chadian government, under President Mahamat Idriss Deby, has taken a significant diplomatic step by suspending the issuance of visas to citizens of the United States. This move, announced on Thursday via a Facebook post by President Deby, is a direct act of retaliation against a travel ban imposed by the United States. The U.S. travel restriction order, initiated by then-President Donald Trump, affects a total of 12 countries, with a notable impact on the African continent.
President Deby, in his announcement, emphasized Chad's sovereignty and self-respect, stating, “I instructed the government to act in accordance with the principles of reciprocity and suspend the issuance of visas to citizens of the United States of America. Chad has no planes to offer, no billions of dollars to give, but Chad has his dignity and pride.” This strong statement underscores the Chadian government's stance on the issue.
The U.S. travel ban disproportionately affects African nations, with seven out of the 12 listed countries being from Africa. These include Chad itself, alongside Somalia, Libya, Eritrea, Sudan, Nigeria, and Equatorial Guinea. The broader list of countries facing these travel and immigration restrictions also encompasses Afghanistan, Iran, Myanmar, Yemen, and Haiti. Furthermore, additional visa restrictions were imposed by the U.S. on citizens of Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela, citing concerns related to immigration.
The African Union (AU) has voiced its apprehension regarding the U.S. travel restrictions. In a formal statement, the AU highlighted the potential negative consequences these measures could have on diplomatic and socio-economic relations between the U.S. and the affected African countries. The continental body has urged the U.S. government to engage in a “more consultative approach” with the nations involved, stressing the importance of mutual respect and open dialogue in resolving such international matters.
