Cesc Fàbregas on the Brink of Chelsea Return? Como Chief Gives Green Light!
Chelsea is actively searching for a new head coach following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior, who was sacked just 106 days after signing a 5½-year contract with the west London club. Among the candidates rumored for the vacant position is Cesc Fàbregas, a former Chelsea player who spent five years at the club after joining from Barcelona in 2014.
Fàbregas is currently the head coach and a minority shareholder at Como, a Serie A club. Como's president, Mirwan Suwarso, has stated that the Italian club would not obstruct Fàbregas from taking up the head coach role at Chelsea, should he desire to return to the Premier League. Suwarso emphasized, "If that makes him happy, that's him. You want your employees to stay with you for as long as possible but at the end of the day we don't own him and he's free to go to Chelsea if he wishes." He also noted that plans are in place to allow Fàbregas to maintain his financial interests in Como, provided he does not leave for a competing Italian club.
Fàbregas has achieved significant success with Como. After retiring from playing football in 2023, he took on an interim coaching role and successfully steered the club to promotion into Italy's top flight, Serie A, in May 2024. Last season, he led the newly promoted Como to a 10th place finish in Serie A, and the club currently sits fifth in the table, having established itself as a force in the Italian top flight. His coaching prowess was recently recognized with the prestigious Bearzot Award, an honor bestowed by Italy's Football Federation for its Coach of the Year.
Despite the prospect of a return to his former club, Fàbregas recently expressed a reluctance to depart Como, stating, "it is very unlikely I'll leave Como." During his playing career at Chelsea, Fàbregas secured two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and the Europa League, demonstrating his deep connection and understanding of the club's winning culture.
Meanwhile, Chelsea finds itself in a challenging period. The team suffered a dismal 3-0 defeat at Brighton, marking their fifth consecutive league loss without scoring a goal, a streak not seen since 1912. Currently placed seventh in the Premier League, Chelsea is seven points adrift of fifth-place Liverpool with only five games remaining, placing them on the brink of failing to qualify for next season's Champions League.
