CCRC staff turnover highest in Central US
Continuing care retirement / life plan communities in the Central states have experienced the highest turnover rates in the country recently, according to the 2025-2026 CCRC Salary & Benefits Report, released last week. The annual report is released by Hospital & Healthcare Compensation Services in cooperation with LeadingAge.
Nationally, the average staff turnover was 38.9% last year among certified nursing assistants, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and administrative support staff.
Turnover in those job categories averaged 46.3% in the the West North Central region (Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota), 43.5% in the East North Central region (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin), 42.2% in the East South Central region (Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee) and 38% in the West South Central region (Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma Texas).
Meanwhile, the Mountain (Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming) and Pacific (Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington) states saw average staff turnover of 39.8% and 31.5%, respectively. The South Atlantic (Delaware, Washington, DC, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia) and Middle Atlantic (New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania) regions saw 36.4% and 29.2% average turnover, respectively. And New England (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont) reported average turnover of 34.6%.
The greatest shift in CCRC turnover came via CNAs. The national average turnover was 40.9% for CNAs versus 36.3% for RNs, 34.6% for LPNs and 20.5% for administrative support staff.
The report used data effective as of March. A total of 523 CCRCs participated, of which 423, or 80.1%, were not-for-profit communities; 63.1% of the non-profit communities were religiously affiliated.
