CAA U-18/U-20 Championships: Clement, Ademola emerge captains

Team Nigeria yesterday picked Honourable Victor Clement and Temitope Ademola to lead the boys’ and girls’ squads at the third Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) U-18/U-20 Championships, which will begin in Abeokuta, Ogun State, today. 

  The 92-man team was unveiled by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) President, Tonobok Okowa, and the federation’s Technical Director, Gabriel Okon, at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta.

  In the team, which moved into the championship’s Games Village on Monday after two weeks of intense camping, are 51 boys and 41 girls.

  A breakdown of the team shows that 23 boys and 17 girls will feature in the U-18 category, while 23 girls and 29 boys will compete in the U-20 category of the Championships.

  Of the number, 18 girls will compete in 17 events at the U-18 category, while 22 boys will also feature in 17 events.

  In the U-20 class, 24 girls will vie for honours in 18 events, while 28 boys are listed for 19 events also in the category.

  Speaking on the squad, Okon said that the technical committee took a critical and thorough look at the strength, technical and tactical abilities of the athletes, as well as the events the country has an advantage in before selecting each member of Team Nigeria.

  “I’m confident that this team will go places, they are the future of Nigerian athletics. They’re young, eager to learn and the spirit in the camp is sky-high,” Okon a former sprinter said.

  Meanwhile, the contingent from Morocco and Tunisia arrived in Abeokuta, Ogun State. As of yesterday evening, over 40 countries had arrived for the event.
