Bye-election: Ibadan North residents reject alleged APC candidate imposition
Residents and political stakeholders in Ibadan North have raised strong objections to what they describe as an attempt by some All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders to impose Faruk Arisekola Alao as the party’s candidate for the upcoming bye-election in the federal constituency.
In a statement led by a local political group chaired by Akano Oginni, the residents accused unnamed party leaders of sidelining democratic processes in favour of personal interest. They claimed that the decision to support Mr. Alao is driven by a desire to maintain political relevance, rather than the collective will of the people.
“In Ibadan North, a few so-called ‘leaders’ are hell-bent on proving they still have control over the party — even if it means sacrificing the collective will of the people,” the group said.
“These are the same men who betrayed Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu at his most critical moment. Now, they seek to redeem themselves by imposing a failed candidate on the people.”
The group criticised Mr. Alao’s political history, pointing to previous electoral defeats as evidence of his inability to secure grassroots support.
“Faruk Arisekola Alao is a political experiment gone wrong. This same Faruk has previously clinched the ticket twice for the State House of Assembly. And twice, he embarrassed the party by losing woefully,” they said.
Concerns were also raised about Mr. Alao’s commitment to the party. The group alleged that he had contested under the Accord Party in the last election and has not maintained consistent membership in the APC.
“He is not even an active, card-carrying member of APC. Yet, some mischief-makers want to drag Ibadan North into chaos using him as a political pawn,” the statement read.
One of the aspirants, Dr. Olaitan Victor, reportedly expressed frustration on the party’s platform, warning that continued imposition could cost the APC the seat.
“If this imposition continues, the next House of Reps member for Ibadan North will come from PDP. Congratulations to DON in advance,” he was quoted as saying.
The group called for a transparent primary election to ensure fairness and unity within the party. “Ibadan North deserves better. Let all aspirants go to the field. Let there be a transparent, free, and fair primary election. That way, whoever emerges will have the full backing of other contenders and the grassroots,” they concluded.
The APC is yet to issue a formal response to the allegations.
