The body of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, arrived in the country on Monday, July 14, from London, accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima. Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 in a London clinic after battling a prolonged illness, reportedly leukaemia.

The late president will be laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, following Islamic burial rites. In a solemn show of respect, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a seven-day national mourning period, ordering all national flags to be flown at half-staff.

President Tinubu described Buhari’s death as a profound national loss, noting, The federal government will accord President Buhari full state honours befitting his towering contributions to our country.

He further announced that a special emergency session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) will be held on Tuesday, July 15, in Abuja to honour the former president’s memory and contributions to Nigeria.

In a related development, the National Assembly has suspended all legislative activities until July 22, 2025. Lawmakers have been urged to reschedule engagements to participate fully in the burial ceremonies. The leadership of both chambers extended condolences to Buhari’s family, the government and people of Nigeria, and the Katsina State community.

A statement from the National Assembly leadership noted, President Buhari will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity and integrity. We pray Almighty Allah grants his soul eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.”

As preparations for the burial in Daura continue, political elites and dignitaries from across the country are expected to converge on the late president’s hometown to pay their final respects.

Buhari’s passing marks the end of an era for a leader known for his steadfast stance on anti-corruption and national security, leaving behind a legacy that will be debated and remembered for years to come.
